August 1999 -- Forty plus people enjoyed the 1960's Dinner & Dance held in June. Coast to Coast Catering (Wayne & Rosemary) provided an excellent roast dinner. As an addition to the tasty desserts, there was a cairn of profiteroles, topped by a candle, a birthday cake for Glenn, whose natal anniversary it was on that very day, shared by Gaye, whose was two days later. We had music by hired jukebox, supplementary warmth from a hired bottled gas fire and disco lights, courtesy of Glenn. The walls were decorated with pictures of 60's pop stars, (taken in their younger days) produced by Tony's computer and we all had to guess who they were. Kathy won the dress parade, in a very fetching outfit topped by a dark wig that made her almost unrecognisable, if it wasn't for the sparkle in her eye! There were other spot prizes for the dancers, who jigged on happily until past pumpkin time. Thanks again to the committee and others that put in all the hard work.
In July twenty one folk turned up at the "Boulevard Cinema" in Atwell. A movie night with a difference. Textiles were optional so most of us were in club uniform. John had picked out, from his private library, a good feature film "The Rainmaker". This is a well made courtroom drama that had not had much exposure in it's day (1995) so was not known to most of us. With it was a comic 'short', and old newsreel and old ads. We watched this supporting programme, supped in the interval, then enjoyed the feature. The theatre was very comfortable, John had brought forward the planned installation of central heating for our benefit! He liked our company so much that we will be seeing him at some Swims when his shift work allows. A function that we shall be repeating regularly.
